Here are three tips for effective denture care:
#1 Handle your dentures with care.
Dentures are durable enough to bite, chew, and do almost anything else natural teeth can do. However, dentures can still break if not carefully handled. We recommend handling your dentures gently and with caution. It can be easy for dentures to crack or get scratched if they fall or are dropped, and the attachments or plastic can also be bent or knocked loose.
#2 Brush and rinse your dentures daily.
Brushing daily is recommended for everyone, even when you have dentures. However, dentures cannot be brushed with toothpaste because it’s too abrasive on the prosthetic teeth and gums. Instead, use an ADA-approved denture cleaning solution and a soft-bristled toothbrush specifically designed for dentures. You may rinse with water between brushing and after meals.
Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled brush can wear down and damage the dentures. Ultimately, daily brushing and rinsing helps preserve your dentures, remove plaque and food debris, and reduce the risk of staining.
#3 Store your dentures safely and properly.
When you’re not wearing your dentures, they must be kept moist, so they don’t lose their shape or dry out and become brittle. You can store your dentures in a container with a denture-soaking solution or water, depending on what your dentist recommends. Ensure you do not place dentures in a hot room or hot water because it can warp the shape.
